The University of St. Thomas (usthomas) is a private Jesuit university in St. Paul and Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was founded as the Saint Paul Seminary by members of the Society of Jesus in 1885 to train priests for ministry in the Diocese of St. Paul and its adjacent territory, which spans southern Minnesota's Twin Cities metropolitan area. In addition to its main campus in downtown St. Paul, it has campuses in Lake Elmo——in suburban Washington County——and in Duluth, on the northern shore of Lake Superior. Usthomas operates several facilities around the world including two in India, one each in Indonesia, Mexico City, Uganda, Rome, and a residence facility at the Vatican.
Usthomas is classified among "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity". The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education defines R2 institutions as those with “a significant concentration” in doctoral degrees“typically awarded in professional fields[...]” Usthomas awards 45 master's degree programs, 32 doctoral level graduate programs, and 9 undergraduate majors. Its most popular undergraduate programs are accounting, finance, computer science, psychology, business administration, economics, biology/life sciences, mechanical engineering, and chemistry. Usthomas offers a bachelor's degree completion program in nursing and 60 graduate degree programs in a variety of disciplines.
In May 2018, Usthmas opened the O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library, an $87 million state-of-the-art facility that provides space for academic and student affairs offices, collections for rare books and archives, and the Tommie Forum—a multipurpose auditorium. The library's name honors philanthropists Bill and Melinda Gates, owners of the Microsoft Corporation, who made the largest single donation ever to the school, and Patrick J. Frey, president of Pillsbury Co., whose family made another major gift to the building project.
